The 590 Big River's solid volume and easy playability also make it the choice of seasoned veterans and professionals, who recognize its strong, dependable performance and German quality at an affordable price. The Hohner Big River can be called one of the best-valued harmonicas on the market. It has the quality and life expectancy of Hohner's Special 20 and Marine Band harmonicas, yet it's more affordable. It also has the advantage of replaceable reed plates—a money-saving alternative to throwing away out-of-tune harmonicas. Whether you're playing down-home melodies on your back porch or fronting a blues band, the 590 Big River harmonica will get the job done. This reliable workhorse offers Hohner's highest standard of German quality. Featuring a 10-hole, airtight, plastic body for increased volume, an open-ended cover for sound projection, and contoured covers that are comfortable to hold, the Hohner 590 Big River harp really delivers the sound you seek. The low-tuning 590 Big River Harp offers one lower octave than standard-tuned harmonicas. Choose your desired key! About MS-Series harmonicas: The acronym 'MS' stands for Modular System, an integrated concept of Hohner's harmonica designs. MS-series harmonicas benefit from innovations that improve their playing characteristics and also significantly facilitate maintenance and handling. All MS-series parts (combs, reed plates, and covers) can be combined individually. Simple screw connections allow for easy assembly. This benefit offers players the possibility to adjust the instruments to their individual requirements. For example, some players prefer the body of one model and the cover plates of another, and so a "custom hybrid" is possible for the discerning player. Easy-to-install replacement reeds are available (see item: RP565 MS Replacement Reed Plates). About Hohner: Hohner is a family company fo

The Hohner 560 Special 20 in country tuning (also known as major 7th tuning in cross harp position) has the 5-draw reed tuned 1/2 a step higher (to F# on a C harp) than normal, allowing you to play a complete major diatonic scale in cross harp. As expert harp player Steve Baker describes in his book, The Harp Handbook, "What all this means in practice is that you can play major melodies whilst retaining the bluesy bending capabilities of the 2nd position. This is great for jazzy numbers or ragtime, as well as many other styles...."Musicians that favor this harmonica include country music legends such as Charlie McCoy and renowned jazz musicians such as Lil' Ronnie Owens of the Grand Dukes. The Special 20 is the most recommended go-to harp for harmonica players of any style, including blues, country, folk, or rock. The Special 20 delivers the coveted Marine Band sound and offers the added benefits of its plastic comb, which doesn't absorb moisture. Plastic combs are stable and do not swell, shrink, or crack. Plus they last longer and are more airtight than wood combs that can become swollen, twisted, and warped. Increased airtightness also means increased responsiveness. Plastic also provides comfort and it's smoother on the lips, preventing chafing. Another plus of the Hohner 560 Special 20 is that its reed plates are recessed into the comb. This keeps the 2 (rather sharp) edges of the brass reed plates from harming the your lips. The Special 20 is the harp-of-choice of harmonica virtuoso John Popper of the band Blues Traveler and was played by Bob Dylan on his 2007-2008 tour. As expert harp player Steve Baker describes in his book, The Harp Handbook, the Marine Band harmonica in Natural Minor tuning means that "all the 3rds in the blow and draw chords...are tuned a semitone lower than the Richter system, so that both blow and draw chords are minor...." This "tuning is great for blues and rock numbers in minor keys..." and is "also very good for minor key reggae numbers, or similar spacey groove music...." In general, natural minor harps have a very bluesy, soulful sound that's perfect for playing minor blues, rock, country, reggae, pop, and jazz. This fabulous tuning is set up to play minor music easily without straining the lips, the lungs, or the mind! All of the notes and chords that were missing on the major diatonic harps for playing minor blues are right there on the natural minor. Natural minors are designed to be played in cross harp (draw), not straight harp (blow) style. In cross harp, many of the draw notes can be bent, allowing for a much more expressive, fluid style of playing. In addition, cross harp is a very popular style used by most players for today's music. The natural minor-tuned Hohner 1896 Marine Band Harmonica follows in the footsteps of harps played by world-famous musicians like John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen, Little Walter, and Paul Butterfield. The Hohner Marine Band is a number-one choice among top professionals and one of the most recognizable harmonicas all over the world. Known for its full tone, wood comb, and its patented cover plates, the Marine Band harmonica was there when harmonica blues was born.
